James T. Scott marker vandalism leaves community members disappointed


COLUMBIA - The marker in remembrance of James T. Scott on the MKT trail was forcibly removed last Thursday, leaving many community members upset and frustrated.
A marker in remembrance of James T. Scott, who was lynched in Boone County in 1923, was forcibly removed.

Scott, a University of Missouri employee at the time, was accused of a crime and dragged by a mob of over 1,000 people from the former Boone County Jail to the Stewart Road Bridge in 1923, where he was lynched. It is the last known documenting of a lynching in the county. ....

James T. Scott lynching historic marker located near MKT trail vandalized


One week after community members, organizations and governmental leaders gathered to collect soil near the site of the 1923 lynching of James T. Scott, the historic marker recognizing his murder has been vandalized.
The Community Remembrance Project of Boone County contacted law enforcement soon after learning the marker had been forcibly removed, leaving just the pedestal.
The Columbia Police Department will be investigating any leads as they are provided, Chief Geoff Jones said in a statement Friday.  In the meantime, we will work with Columbia Parks and Recreation to increase security for the site. James T. Scott marker replaced as authorities continue to investigate


COLUMBIA — The Community Remembrance Project of Boone County (CRP) said they found the marker on the MKT trail in remembrance of James T. Scott which was forcibly removed on Thursday, according to a news release. 
I went from shock to disappointment to back to shock, a mixture of sadness, and also a reminder of feeling unsafe, CRP member Brittani Fults said.
As of Friday afternoon, the marker was repaired and replaced on its plaque.

University of Missouri graduate Brittani Fults addresses a crowd of about 150 people April 29 where she stood five years ago at the dedication of the James T. Scott memorial plaque, located on the MKT Trail near the southwest intersection of South Providence and Stewart roads. The historic marker has been cut away by an unknown party.TNS
