The first crash was reported around 2 p.m. in the 2000 block of Avenida Vista Del Monte, according to the Simi Valley Police Department. Officers found a city light pole had been knocked over, reportedly by a delivery van that was actively working in the neighborhood. Police photos show the concrete pole lying across the sidewalk of a residential street, draped by a leafy branch ripped from a tree as it fell. The base of the pole was shattered. ....

Simi Valley police explain hate crime reporting during public forum

These are things that I thought were important because of things that have happened around the country and things that have happened locally, Livingstone said.
Hate crime  vs. hate incident
The forum began by distinguishing between a hate crime, which can be prosecuted with criminal charges, and a hate incident, which is legally protected by the First Amendment s right to freedom of expression.
According to California law, a hate crime is when a criminal act is committed due to a perceived characteristic of the victim. Such characteristics can range from race and gender to sexual orientation and disability.
Criminal acts can include both violent crimes like assault and property crimes like vandalism, and the crimes can be attempted or threatened though never committed. Police said any act that aims at causing physical injury, emotional suffering, intimidation or damage to property could qualify as a hate crime. ....

Drug-carrying drone seized in drug arrest marks Ventura County first

The suspected use of a drone to transport illegal drugs in Simi Valley last month appears to be a first for Ventura County.
The March 19 incident remains under investigation as the Simi Valley Police Department awaits results of laboratory tests to determine whether a substance attached to the drone in question was heroin, said Cmdr. Steve Shorts on April 9. Due to the risk of exposure to fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that can be fatal in small doses, the department no longer conducts its own presumptive tests, he said. Results from an outside lab could take weeks.
Officers came across the drone while taking a suspect into custody last month on Enchanted Way, north of Highway 118 near First Street. Narcotics detectives had been investigating the Simi Valley resident, 51-year-old John Piani, for suspected sales of heroin and methamphetamine, officials said. He also had an outstanding warrant, Shorts said. ....
