A Washington state man has been criminally charged two years after he fatally shot his daughter’s Black friend after she sneaked him into her bedroom.
The Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office announced Monday that Charles Heller, a 49-year-old Everett man, has been charged with second-degree murder two years after he fatally shot 21-year-old Dustyn Hunt, the young Black man his 20-year-old daughter Lauryn was dating.
The shooting happened after Heller went to his daughter’s room after he and his wife heard her talking and laughing with someone. When Heller went to his daughter’s bedroom door, he was armed. ....

Integrity In Question As Everett Fire Department Fraud Investigation Revealed

Integrity is printed on the outside of every Everett Fire vehicle.On Wednesday we passed along a report issued on December 28th, 2020 from the Washington State Auditor’s Office into the City’s handling of an investigation conducted in 2019 by the Everett Fire Department into allegations of fraud by an inspector in the Fire Marshal’s Office. The end result of the case is the inspector resigned and paid $12,759.13 to the City, the equivalent of 229 hours in pay. The inspector resigned on January 21, 2020. On January 15, 2021 Everett Fire Chief Dave DeMarco sent an email to Everett City Council members advising of the investigation and attached what he called an executive and detailed summary of the fraud investigation. He also attached a summary of the findings presented to the employee. Dear Mayor and Council President,
This letter is a follow-up to my Dec. 8, 2020 correspondence. As noted, the original remarks were brief. It was based upon my learning of the court documents that provided information that should make it irresponsible to consider the proposed candidate to be the Chief of Police of our city. As a longtime resident, as well as in my case professionally, there is concern about the city’s actions and that the law is not being adhered to properly. Not to make any allegation, but to clarify what investigative steps were taken by the city, as it appears items were not discovered or disclosed. Were those making recommendations to the mayor and the city council aware of the relevant information during the interview and confirmation process? ....
