Seniors Rally To Call For Removal Of Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood

    A senior citizen advocacy group in Massachusetts rallied today to amplify their call for the ouster of Springfield’s top cop. 
    In front of Springfield City Hall, under a hot midday sun, about 40 people chanted, sang, held signs, and listened to speakers call for the removal of Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood.
   The calls for Clapprood’s ouster stem from an online meeting the police commissioner had with members of the Massachusetts Senior Action Council in April to discuss police reform.  During the meeting, and in a follow-up letter to the organization, Clapprood was “defensive and dismissive” about allegations of racial bias within the police department, said Mattie Lacewell, the president of the council’s Springfield chapter. ....

SPRINGFIELD Faced with what he describes as a lack of cooperation from federal officials, Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni filed a lawsuit Wednesday seeking records from the U.S. attorney’s office in Boston that could identify police officers who used excessive force and then lied about it.
The suit stems from last summer’s U.S. Department of Justice report on the Springfield Police Department’s narcotics unit. Based on a two-year investigation, the report outlined numerous allegations of city police officers physically abusing suspects and filing false reports, and supervisors looking the other way. City Continues Cracking Down On Illegal Dumping

The City of Springfield going after illegal dumpers in the city. The city has been at it since back in 2014 when more and more residents began complaining of people running into certain neighborhoods and dumping not only trash, but beds and other items as well. Cameras were installed to identify, find and prosecute those who are violating the quality of life of residents. The Mayor says since October of last year, people were cited in seven different cases. One man was cited three separate times for illegal dumping.
Mayor Sarno stated, “We are going to remain vigilant to ensure everyone understands illegal dumping will not be tolerated in the City of Springfield. We are continuing to expand areas and the violators should be aware we will catch up with you, so think twice. This program will remain a priority for my administration and we will provide the necessary resources to ensure all violators are prosecuted.” ....

Springfield Police working with the District Attorney s Violent Offender Task Force make a traffic stop and got more than they were expecting. Police say 22 year old Nathan Mercado was known to them. He was wearing a court ordered GPS bracelet. When police first pulled him over they found a gun under the front seat. Wanting to arrest the suspect, police say Mercado struck them, trying to avoid arrest. He was then subdued. During the resulting search they found a loaded gun -with sixteen rounds of armor piercing ammo.
On Tuesday afternoon members of District Attorney Gulluni’s Violent Offender Task Force and Springfield Police Officers arrested 22 year old Nathan Mercado. Officers and Task Force members from the Massachusetts State Police & West Springfield Police Department seized two illegally possessed firearms from Mr. Mercado as well. ....
