Study shows early preterm births can be decreased with DHA supplementation

Early preterm births may be dramatically decreased with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) supplements, with a dose of 1000 mg more effective for pregnant women with low DHA levels than the 200 mg found in some prenatal supplements, according to a study led by researchers from the University of Kansas and the University of Cincinnati and published today in
EClinicalMedicine, a clinical journal of The Lancet. Early preterm birth, defined as birth before 34 weeks gestation, is a serious public health issue because these births result in the highest risk of infant mortality and child disability.
This study tells us that pregnant women should be taking DHA, said Susan E. Carlson, Ph.D., professor of nutrition in the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition in the KU School of Health Professions, co-principal investigator and first author on the study. Practitioners, families, students, researchers invited to 2021 KU Autism Conference

LAWRENCE The Kansas Center for Autism Research and Training, part of the University of Kansas Life Span Institute, will host the conference Autism Across the Life Span on April 23.
The virtual event will address the needs of families, professionals and educators interested in autism spectrum disorder. The one-day event will feature 16 breakout sessions on behavioral health, interventions, research and neuroscience, and transition.
“While we always are excited for this annual meeting as it brings together our community, we are particularly eager for this year’s,” said Matt Mosconi, director of the Kansas Center for Autism Research and Training. “While we look forward to in-person meetings in coming years, this virtual environment will provide a means for more people to be involved and for us to gather, learn and continue our broader mission of advancing understanding and support for families affected by autism spectrum disorder.” ....

KU series to feature expert in addiction and health disparities in racial, ethnic minorities

LAWRENCE – The Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research & Treatment at the University of Kansas will kick off its spring seminar series featuring a talk on community-responsive interventions for addictive behaviors.
Monica Webb Hooper from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities will offer the talk at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 19. Free registration for the virtual presentation, which will be held via Zoom, is available here.
Hooper is a renowned translational behavioral scientist and clinical health psychologist. Her area of research focuses on the effect of smoking and tobacco use on racial and ethnic minorities. She has focused on developing culture-based and community responsive interventions for chronic illness and health behavior. ....

KU child care training partnership awarded $2.3 million | The University of Kansas

LAWRENCE – Two previously independent early care and education training programs are collaborating to provide professional development opportunities and technical assistance to child care providers across Kansas, with a total grant of $2.3 million awarded through the Kansas Department for Children and Families (KDCF).
The partnership between the Kansas Inservice Training System (KITS), based at the University of Kansas, and the Kansas State University-affiliated Kansas Child Care Training Opportunities Inc. (KCCTO) is designed to increase the quality of service that child care providers can deliver to children and their families, said David Lindeman, KITS director. Through June 30, grant funding will help to address the professional needs of infant-toddler caregivers, teachers, organizations and families throughout Kansas. ....
