LEWISTON The City Council appointed Janet Beaudoin to the School Committee on Tuesday after a motion to table the nomination failed.
Beaudoin, a parent of two Lewiston students, will step in for Ward 2 committee member Elgin Physic, who resigned when he became the Lewiston High School boys basketball coach.
After a short application period that ended Monday, the council voted 5-2 on Mayor Mark Cayer’s nomination.
Councilor Alicia Rea made a motion to table the item until the July meeting due to the short notice of the nomination, but it failed 5-2. She said the council received the details on Cayer’s nomination about four hours before the meeting Tuesday. ....

LEWISTON The City Council on Tuesday extended rules that encourage outdoor dining in hopes of giving restaurants more options heading into an uncertain winter.
The unanimous vote keeps in place a previously approved resolution that authorizes city staff to work with businesses to expand operations when needed, including onto municipal rights of way, and public or private open spaces and parking areas.
The council initially approved the resolution in May, which also waives fees for park use and sidewalk and street occupancy. ....

LEWISTON New rules under consideration would expand the use of sidewalks for business uses, making it easier for restaurants to offer outdoor dining and even retail stores to set up merchandise outside.

Lewiston council OKs school budget by narrow margin

Read Article
LEWISTON After more than 90 minutes of discussion, the City Council narrowly approved next year’s $93 million school budget with a 4-3 vote Tuesday.
The vote came less than a week after the School Committee shuffled its budget figures in order to reduce the local tax impact, and highlighted a fractured relationship between members of the City Council and School Committee.
Councilors were at odds over the spending plan, with some arguing that year-over-year increases to the school budget have led to stagnation for municipal services, while others said students need the support now more than ever.
Councilor Zack Pettengill, who voted against the budget, said, “I never thought I’d see the day when the community doesn’t support the schools, but I’m not hearing from anyone who supports it.” ....
