The Sri Lankan Parliament on Thursday, May 20, 2021, passed a controversial Bill on laws governing the China-backed Colombo Port city, with a majority of 149 legislators – in the 225-member House – voting in its favour. The development comes after the Supreme Court suggested certain amendments, following over a dozen petitions challenging the Bill that political opposition and civil society groups said “directly affected” Sri Lanka’s sovereignty.
Some of the strongest attacks on the Bill, during the debate, came from Tamil MPs. Legislator and former Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran on Wednesday by asking the government if its stated policy of striving for ‘One Country, One Law’ meant “Chinese law”. ....

Colombo (News 1st); The Sri Lankan Parliament on Wednesday (21) observed a moment of silence to remember those who were killed in the 2019 April 21st Attacks.
Members of the ruling faction led by the Prime Minister were seen wearing black arms bands condemning the attacks two years ago, while members of the opposition were seen wearing black suits to Parliament.
Addressing parliament, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said the government is prepared to assist any investigation without interfering in the judicial process.
The Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the April 21st Attacks and other relevant documentation was already directed to the Attorney-General for legal proceedings to punish the perpetrators of the April 21st Attacks, said the Prime Minister. ....

Sri Lanka: Chinese Sinopharm COVID vaccine not to be administered before safety clearance


This statement comes amid growing criticism of the Chinese vaccine
China`s Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine will not be given to Sri Lankans until the safety aspect of the vaccine is ensured by the health authorities, the country`s Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has said.
In response to questions raised by the Opposition, Pavithra told the Sri Lankan Parliament on Thursday that their regulatory authority had been analyzing data on the vaccine to ensure the safety of the vaccine, Daily Mirror reported.
The minister also said that only the Chinese nationals were given the vaccine at present, adding that Sri Lankans will be given only after the World Health Organisation (WHO) approved it for emergency use. ....
