COLOMBO (News 1st): A gazette notification has been issued amending the minimum qualifications required to sit for Sri Lanka Law College Entrance Examination.
According to the gazette, the minimum qualification to sit for the Law Entrance Examination from 2021 onwards is amended to two credit passes and one simple pass at the GCE Advanced Level Examination.
Previously, the minimum qualification to sit for the Law Entrance Examination used to be only three simple passes at the GCE A/Ls.
Furthermore, the gazette also mentions that Law graduates from Foreign Universities will be selected to Sri Lanka Law College, following a special selection test. ....

Colombo (News 1s); “My desire is to do justice to mankind in accordance with the law and acting according to my conscience and without any distinction as to race, religion, language, gender, identity, the status of parties or any other factors,” said Justice Kumudini Wickramasinghe at the Ceremonial Sitting at the Supreme Court on Wednesday (20).
“We have to work together to dispense justice to the society and clear the backlog,” said Justice Kumudini Wickramasinghe noting that the staff also should be trained accordingly and provided with sufficient facilities.
The current situation in the country warrants the utilization of online platforms to hear cases since it is not healthy for a country to halt its judicial functions even in a time of a pandemic, she said. ....

Senior ASG Sarath Jayamanne retires after 32 years as a top prosecutor


Senior Additional Solicitor General Sarath Jayamanne, PC, retires from service on January 16 after 32 years as a prosecutor with the Attorney General’s Department.
As a counsel, he figured in the prosecution of many landmark cases including the Hokandara murder, Katuneriya double murder, Tony Martin case, Kobeigane beauty queen case, Murder of High Court Judge Sarath Ambepitiya and Mirusivil massacre.
Jayamanne also served as the Director-General of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) at one time.
He is a lecturer in Evidence and Criminal Procedure at the Sri Lanka Law College, Faculty of Law University of Colombo and the Open University of Sri Lanka. The many top positions he has held in the public service reflects his versatility as a legal luminary. ....

New Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations, Mohan Pieris, presented his credentials to the Secretariat today.
Before his latest appointment, Mr. Pieris had an active legal practice in Sri Lanka and worked as a professor and lecturer at various universities since 2015, including the National Law University of Delhi, Rajiv Gandhi National Law University in Patiala and the National Law University of Advanced Legal Studies of Kochi.
Earlier in his career, he served as Chief Justice of Sri Lanka s Supreme Court from 2013 to 2015. He was appointed Chairman of the Seylan Bank PLC in 2011 and also served as a Senior Legal Advisor to the Cabinet Ministries in Sri Lanka during that time. ....
