All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) leader and ex-Cabinet Minister Rishad Bathiudeen is a prominent Sri Lankan politician, who is very often in the news for the wrong reasons. 
The 48-year-old Bathiudeen hailing from Dharapuram in the Mannar District is an engineer by training. Known widely as Rishad, he was first elected to Parliament from the Northern Vanni electoral district in December 2001. He has been consistently elected as Vanni MP since then in 2004, 2010,2015 and 2020. Rishad has also served continuously from January 2007 to November 2019 as Cabinet Minister in the governments of Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena. Currently his party the ACMC has 4 MP’s and 169 Local Authority Members.  ....

COLOMBO (News 1st): The registration of social media users in the country as announced by Subject Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, indicates a crackdown on Freedom of Expression of the citizens, human rights activists raised concerns on Monday (Dec. 21).
“First, it indicates there might be a crackdown on Freedom of Expression, and one also wonders why is it that the government wants to register social media users. People with known profiles, who use their own identities are already visible, so they can be seen,” Human Rights Advocate and Attorney-at-Law Ambika Satkunanadan, told News 1st on Monday (Dec. 21).
The possibility of social media platforms providing user data to the government remains doubtful, the Former Member of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (HRCSL) said during News 1st’s Talk of the Town programme with Faraz Shauketaly. ....

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) conducted the first national study on the treatment
and conditions of prisoners from February 2018 to January 2020. The findings of the report are very relevant now in light of the prisoner unrest and violence that took place at the Anuradhapura Remand Prison in April 2020 and at the Mahara closed prison most recently, in the context of the spread of COVID-19 in prisons.

The riot in Sri Lanka’s Mahara prison on November 29, in which 11 inmates were killed, has turned the spotlight on the alarming conditions in the country’s prisons, only magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic that has not spared even highly guarded prison cells. Eight of the 11 victims were found to be COVID-19 positive.
The prison riot less than a fortnight ago is the starkest reflection yet of the anxiety of inmates there were other protests and attempted escapes reported in the past weeks as COVID-19 raged through their crowded cells. At least 187 at the Mahara prison had tested positive and other prisoners, who were in no position to maintain physical distancing or access tests at their wi ....
