SCC taps North Surry alum to head Yadkin center

DOBSON Each member of Facilities and Maintenance Department at Surry Community College recently earned a certificate in Lean Six Sigma White Belt Training from the United Quality Management Institute.
The 21-member team completed a four-hour training session that began Oct. 13, and ended Jan. 15. Their instructor was Dr. Ron Fite of the United Quality Management Institute.
“I watched presentations about the facilities and maintenance projects as a part of the class competition,” said SCC President Dr. David Shockley. “I was so proud of our employees detailing how they will make their areas lean and more efficient. Other areas of the college team will go through lean training including human resources, finance, technology services, and advising.” ....

Recent Wilkes Sheriff’s Office investigations resulted in the
seizure of a large quantity of methamphetamine.
The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office’s latest round of felony drug arrests reflects the increased prevalence of imported methamphetamine in Wilkes County, said Capt. Craig Dancy, who heads the agency’s narcotics unit.
“Everything has gone to meth now,” said Dancy when he announced these latest cases Friday. Charges against all but four of 35 defendants in the latest round include meth offenses.
“And they’re not making it here anymore because it can’t compete” with meth produced by drug cartels in Mexico, said Dancy. “We haven’t found a meth lab (in Wilkes) in two years.” ....

First vaccine doses In Wilkes expected next week


Wilkes County’s first shipment of COVID-19 vaccine is expected next week, but local and state officials still don’t know how much is coming.
Meanwhile, 85,800 doses of the Pfizer vaccine are expected at 53 hospitals across the state by the end of this week. North Carolina’s first shipment — 1,925 doses — arrived at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem about 7:30 a.m. Monday. Vaccination of employees there started Monday.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced the number of doses expected at each of the 53 hospitals this week, including 975 doses at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. ....
