Volunteers give back by cleaning memorial downtown


Cleaning dead bugs off spotlights at 8 a.m. on a Saturday may not sound like fun, but it’s a monthly ritual for a group of volunteers comprised of local Scouts and Rotarians.
Members of the Rotary Club of Greater Huntsville and two Scout troops based in Toney spend the first Saturday of every month sprucing up the Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial at 200 Monroe St.
Read Klos of Meridianville, owner of Klos Diamond Center in Huntsville and a Rotary Club member, has overseen the cleanup program at the memorial for almost two years.
He initially recruited some scouts to volunteer and later brought in members of the Rotary Club to assist and serve as mentors. “It was a natural fit,” he said. ....

A nationwide relay aimed at honoring our nation’s heroes and “making Memorial Day matter again” will stop in Huntsville this week.
Carry The Load, a nonprofit organization formed 10 years ago by two veteran U.S. Navy SEALS, is visiting Huntsville as part of its “Memorial May” itinerary. The purpose is to impress on Americans the true meaning of Memorial Day, through events in 50 states and 29 countries, culminating in Dallas, Texas, on Memorial weekend. ....

Nationwide relay carries flag to honor those who serve


A relay team from Carry The Load, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to bring awareness of the sacrifices made each day by our military, veterans, first responders and their families, will travel through the Rocket City on May 22.
“It really means that people care enough to think about those whom they never knew, but they know lost their lives because of serving this country,” Julie Kink, a Gold Star sister, said when asked what it means to her when people she doesn’t know do things to honor those who’ve died while serving.
“It means that people in the general public care enough to recognize that Memorial Day is something special and it’s not only the official start to summer,” she said. ....
