Whanganui mayor Hamish McDouall is looking to make good on his intention to have iwi representation on Whanganui District Council's three main committees.
He says the aim is to improve Māori participation in decision-making at the council table whether Māori wards are brought in or not, and representation with speaking and voting rights will be an advancement.
"In 2019 when I got re-elected I stood on the Opera House stage and I said I want iwi representation on the three main committees of council within this term.

The man who died after a crash on State Highway 2, near Dannevirke, has been named as Hamish Cameron.
Emergency services were called to the fatal crash near the intersection of SH2 and Otanga Rd at 5.39am on April 28.
The 24-year-old was from Whanganui.
A police spokeswoman said: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

Insulting and inappropriate - that's the response to the New Zealand High Commission's Twitter plea for oxygen cylinders to treat a seriously sick staff member with Covid-19.
It comes as the Foreign Ministry this afternoon confirmed a number of locally employed personnel at the commission have contracted the virus - with one falling seriously ill.

OPINION:
Precisely who is in charge when the Reserve Bank decides to restrict lending in the name of maintaining financial stability has been hard to pin down for a long time.
Back in 2013, the
Reserve Bank began the process of developing loan to value ratio (LVR) restrictions, which would have a significant impact on many aspiring first-home buyers, a politically important group that even then was facing diminishing affordability.
But the central bank's then governor, Graeme Wheeler, a former top international official with little political experience, was nowhere to be seen, as a debate over the policy brewed.
