Former Syracuse ice hockey forward Emma Polaski was selected eighth overall by the Connecticut Whale in the 2021 NWHL Draft. Polaski scored 31 goals and assists in 128 career games with the Orange. The selection makes her the sixth SU skater currently in the NWHL. Polaski attended a Whale free agent camp during the offseason and entered the draft as one of just two Syracuse players who graduated from the program in 2021 the other, Kristen Siermachesky. The Morristown, New Jersey native was the Orange’s only assistant captain during the 2020-21 season. Polaski recorded nine points (five goals and four assists) in 19 games during her senior season, and she led the team in power-play goals with three. She scored twice in a 7-1 rout over RIT, both SU and RIT coming on the man-advantage. ....

With 36 seconds left, Moloughney grabbed the puck mid-air in a controversial hand-pass call that left Syracuse in its own zone with one final break to find an equalizer. Lauren Bellefontaine won the faceoff, and Syracuse moved the puck into the neutral zone. Mae Batherson took the puck and carried it up the left wing. With 20 seconds left, Jessica DiGirolamo followed the puck behind the net and fed it across Raygan Kirk in goal. In an attempt to freeze the puck, Kirk lied flat in the crease, leaving the net wide open. The loose puck trickled across to Moloughney, who set it up on her forehand, shot and missed the open frame. ....

Madison Beishuizen collected the puck at center ice, pivoted left and fired a shot on goal. The puck collided off sophomore Mallory Uihlein’s skate and flew into the air. Penn State’s goalie Josie Bothun committed to her right, exposing the left side of the goal. After noticing the redirected puck, Bothun planted her right leg in the corner, dove left and outstretched her glove. But the length of her 5-foot-6 frame wasn’t enough. The Orange finished the 2020-21 season on a seven-game win streak, ending with a weekend sweep of Robert Morris. The Orange have given up just 31 goals in 15 conference games, the fewest in the CHA behind goalie Allison Small’s 512 saves. Normally, CHA standings are determined by the number of points received in conference play. But this year, due to canceled games and uncertain schedules, seeding is based on conference win percentage. Syracuse played the third-fewest CHA games, but its seeding remains unchanged by this rule. ....
