Southern DHB Medical Officer of Health Dr Michael Butchard has recommended the Do Not Drink notice (DNDN) on the Waikouaiti, Karitane and Hawksbury Village water supply can be lifted.
This follows a comprehensive investigation by the Dunedin City Council into elevated lead levels that had been detected in the area, finding customer pipes, fittings and tapware leaching lead into the water were most likely the cause of the high lead results at the Waikouaiti Golf Course and the Karitane Bowls Club.
The most likely cause of the high lead result in the raw water reservoir is lead in sediment from a spike in water turbidity. Sediment is filtered out by the treatment process, so does not reach the treated water. ....

Dunedin City Council has agreed to the terms of reference for a review into its handling of the East Otago lead scare.
The settlements of Waikouaiti, Karitane and Hawksbury Village are still taking drinking water from tankers after spikes in lead levels were found intermittently in the reticulated supply from July last year.
An independent reviewer will be appointed by the council once the water supply is returned.
That was expected to happen in the coming months with a tentative date of the end of June. ....

Dunedin council can't confirm whether faulty test results led to lead scare

An electronic sign at the entrance to Waikouaiti, near Dunedin, warns people not to drink the tap water there.
As the council scrambled to find the source of the contamination, affected residents were offered blood tests.
Water testing carried out by the Dunedin City Council since found no further readings over the maximum acceptable limit for lead.
That has raised questions over the initial testing results, and this week the council was asked specifically if it could rule out whether the initial samples showed false positive results.
