BURSA Malaysia-listed companies have realised how important it is to be cash rich when faced with an unexpected and severe situation like the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is especially given the tough economic conditions the business community has had to weather in the past year, with lockdowns enforced in Malaysia and its major trading partners to contain the spread of the virus, bringing activities practically to a standstill.
Many companies built up their cash positions in 2020 in anticipation of the severe economic downturn due to Covid-19, notes private investor and former investment banker Ian Yoong.
“Larger listed companies issued bonds and other fixed-income securities. It is a natural response to be conservative in the face of an impending severe economic downturn,” he says. ....

KLCI claws back above 1,600 level as PM assures state of emergency does not entail military coup

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 12): The main index at Bursa Malaysia pared some of its losses after having dropped below the 1,600-point level in the morning session following the reinstatement of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in several states.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had today also consented to a proclamation of emergency for a period up to Aug 1, 2021, to contain Covid-19.
The benchmark index pared its losses after Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin assured Malaysians that the declaration of state of emergency by the Agong earlier today does not entail a military coup and that the civilian government is still in place. ....

KLCI remains lacklustre on reinstatement of MCO, proclamation of emergency

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 12): The main index of Bursa Malaysia remained lacklustre today following the reinstatement of the movement control order (MCO) in several states.
Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today also consented to the proclamation of emergency until Aug 1, 2021 to contain Covid-19.
At 10am, the FBM KLCI had lost 10.77 points to 1,606.48.
Market breadth was negative with 511 losers and 321 gainers, while 393 counters traded unchanged. Trading volume was 1.88 billion shares valued at RM1.26 billion.
