There’s a new wolf on the block at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. Officials with the Woodland Nature Station have announced the new wolf is a three-year old female, currently known as #5525 to their animal ambassador family. The arrival of the female wolf comes after the passing of Kaya, who was brought to the Nature Station in November of last year and reunited with Jasper, a former mate of hers from another nature center. Kaya and Jasper were red wolves which officials say are a critically endangered species with less than 25 individuals remaining in the wild. Friends of LBL spokesman Jennifer Wheatley told us at that time the Nature Station was proud to have been a part of their breeding and species survival program for 30 years. ....
8:05 Tracy Ross and Woodlands Nature Station naturalist John Pollpeter discuss the beavers of Land Between the Lakes. Beavers are the second-largest rodent in the world; the first largest is the South American capybara. Beavers can get up to 60 pounds in this area, Pollpeter begins. They re a very family-oriented animal; that [tail flap] is a warning to the rest of the family that there s danger nearby. ....

Since then, January has been one of the best times of year to view the now abundant bald eagle population of LBL. This is due to a couple of different reasons, Pollpeter begins. Because of the colder temperatures you find up North, a lot of eagles will migrate South along the Mississippi Flyway and find Land Between the Lakes to be the first open water in a long distance. So we end up having twice as many bald eagles in the area as we normally do. ....
