LAGRANGE - Undeveloped interstate highway rights of way could be used to house solar panels, broadband projects and electric-vehicle charging stations under legislation being introduced by U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff.
The Sustainable Highways Innovation Act is modeled after The Ray, an 18-mile stretch of Interstate 85 in LaGrange used to test clean energy technologies, Ossoff, D-Ga., said Wednesday during a news conference held beside a solar array at the site.
The Ray, a nonprofit named in memory Ray Anderson, an environmentalist and founder of the flooring company Interface Inc., also features a drive-over tire safety inspection station.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and The Ray today announced the second phase of the collaborative vehicle-to-everything (V2X) infrastructure development project on The Ray Highway along I-85 in West Georgia.
GDOT announced Kia as the OEM partner, supported by HATCI (Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc.). With the inclusion of Kia and HATCI, GDOT and The Ray will expand the use of Panasonic technology to directly engage an auto OEM for automotive collaboration on connected vehicle applications, such as freight signal priority and road work zone warnings, to improve transportation safety and enable more efficient driving. ....

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced its plan to modernize the US electric grid and utilize highway right-of-way (ROW) land to host transmission lines, build renewable energy projects, deploy broadband, and support electric vehicle charging.
The announcement from the Biden Adminstration, which was also backed by the Department of Energy, was hailed as a great step forward in the fight against climate change by Georgia’s sustainable mobility testbed The Ray.
