Crews begin assembling tower crane in Harrisburg

It s time go vertical – that’s what Harrisburg University says about construction on its new 11-story Health Science Education Center in downtown Harrisburg.From Friday through Sunday, crews are assembling a giant tower crane that’s going to be doing much of the heavy lifting for the project at Third and Chestnut streets.Chestnut Street is closed between South Second and South Third streets while crews put the crane together. The street is expected to reopen at 6 a.m. Tuesday.Harrisburg University provided some facts about the crane:It will be about 255 feet high, which is as tall as the Pennsylvania State Archives Building and 5 feet taller than the Kissing Tower at Hershey Park.The radius is about 164 feet.It can lift 35,275 pounds, which is approximately 14 Honda Civics.Harrisburg University’s Health Science Education Center is expected to accommodate at least 1,000 additional students in nursing, pharmaceutical sciences and other allied health programs. Plans show that the North 6th Street Lofts, a five-story apartment building will be built along Sixth Street in Harrisburg.
There are a lot of construction projects going on in Harrisburg at the moment, from older properties being converted into apartments to larger residential projects to a seven-story mixed-use building that will include a 500-space parking garage.
“It really is an amazing amount of development that’s going on here in the city of Harrisburg unprecedented,” Brad Jones, CEO of Harristown Enterprises said on Mayor Eric Papenfuse’s weekly program last month. “I’ve been doing this for about 20 years now [with] Harristown and I haven’t seen this much development in my entire career here.” ....
