Oregon Lawmakers Promised Radical Change on Racial Justice in 2021. Did They Deliver?

The founders of Reimagine Oregon say change was incremental rather than transformative.

Black Lives Matter protests around Oregon in summer 2020, like this one in Eugene, ignited Reimagine Oregon and its legislative agenda. A year later, they say they've made some gains—but nowhere near enough.
Eleven months ago, the leaders of some of Oregon’s most venerable Black-led organizations—community groups, activists, nonprofits, and protest leaders—decided it was time to seize the moment.
In the wake of the massive protests over the murder of George Floyd, and with the fresh memory of how quickly emergency funding and policy were passed when COVID hit in spring of 2020, there was, as Urban League of Portland President and CEO Nkenge Harmon Johnson put it, “an opportunity for catalytic change.... Incremental change does not have to be the norm. We can move mountains to make sure that our communities are doing all right.”

Justice organizations push for overtime pay for Oregon farmworkers

Justice organizations push for overtime pay for Oregon farmworkers
View Comments
A panel from Pineros Y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste on Tuesday urged legislators to pass legislation that would require Oregon farmers to pay overtime.
Panelists included Ramon Ramirez, a founding member and former president of PCUN; Nkenge Harmon Johnson, president and CEO of the Urban League of Portland; and Eric Richardson, executive director of the Lane County NAACP. Sharon Gary-Smith, president of Portland's NAACP,
moderated the discussion.
If House Bill 2358 passes, agricultural workers would only be able to work more than 40 hours in one workweek if their employer guaranteed overtime pay at one and one-half times the worker’s regular rate of pay per hour or one and one-half times the regular price for all work done on a piece-rate basis.

Pamplin Media Group - Feds: Lack of charges for bogus arrest not 'the last word'

April 21 2021
Feds discuss decision not to pursue charges against West Linn officers involved in 2017 false arrest.
Two months after federal prosecutors decided not to pursue charges against the West Linn police officers involved in the 2017 false arrest of Michael Fesser, some in the West Linn community and others in the Portland area are still disappointed and angry at the decision.
But they also have a bit of hope.
An FBI investigator and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon met with community members to hear their concerns and explain their decision at a virtual meeting April 20.
West Linn police falsely arrested Fesser, a Black Portlander, in 2017 as a favor to Fesser's boss, a friend of then-WLPD Chief Terry Timeus. The boss, Eric Benson, feared Fesser was going to file a lawsuit against him and his southeast Portland towing company for the racial discrimination he said he faced at work.

Pamplin Media Group - Proposed settlement would end dispute over aid to Blacks

Proposed settlement would end dispute over aid to Blacks
Pending applicants would benefit if federal judge approves, but state must commit to more data.
Gov. Kate Brown has announced a tentative settlement in a legal challenge to Oregon's setting aside $62 million in federal funds to aid Black families, businesses and nonprofits.
The settlement still requires approval from a federal judge.
But it would resolve a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in October by Great Northern Resources, a logging company based in John Day; Dynamic Service Fire and Security, an electrical contractor in Salem, and Walter Van Leja, its owner. It named the state — through Katy Coba, director of the Department of Administrative Services and the chief operating officer of state government — as the lead defendant.
