KALAMAZOO, MI Construction on a new apartment building with a daycare center in Kalamazoo’s Edison Neighborhood is now complete.
The Creamery is a $14.7-million mixed-use development that includes 48 mixed-income apartments, an expansion of the YWCA Kalamazoo’s downtown Children’s Center and an additional commercial/office suite at 1101 Portage Street, according to a statement from Hollander Development President Matt Hollander.
The building is named for the old Kalamazoo Creamery Co. building that was torn down at the site on the corner of Lake and Portage streets. ....

40 years ago, the Stouffer Battle Creek Hotel opened, and was the centerpiece of a spurt of downtown development that hasn’t been seen, until recently.  Back then, Bob Miller, Sr., publisher of the Battle Creek Enquirer had just retired and set his sights on working, through the Miller Foundation and the community to update Battle Creek’s downtown.  Voters approved a merger of the city and Battle Creek Township, Kellogg built a world headquarters, and soon the W.K. Kellogg Foundation would build a new downtown headquarters.  Many old buildings were sacrificed, as the downtown took on a very different look.   Since then, there have been a few projects, but momentum toward another makeover has been steadily building.  One of the chief players in that effort has been Battle Creek Unlimited.  (BCU). ....

New Year’s Eve, 1869: A Great Day for Battle Creek
New Year’s Eve was a very big deal in Battle Creek in 1869.   The city had been incorporated 10 years earlier and continued to grow and grow.  And on this New Year’s, the city’s 5,800 residents were buzzing as Hamblin’s Opera House opened.  On December 31, 1869, an audience of 1700 attended a program of singers and instrumentalists.
The building cost $40,000.  A historical account published a few years later stated, “One of the chief attractions of Battle Creek is its commodious opera-house. Up to 1868, the city possessed no regular place of amusement of sufficient size to induce large first-class theatrical troops to visit the city. In that year, however, Mr. A. C. Hamblin, with his characteristic enterprise, erected a handsome and substantial building, which he fitted up in elegant style, and introduced in it all of the modern improvements and stage effects.
