MOLLY: HIGH TEMPERATURES FOR THE LAST WEEK AND A HALF HAVE CLIMBED ABOVE FREEZING, THAT HAS BEEN A BIG THING IN HOW MUCH SNOW WAS ON THE GROUND. IT IS ALSO IMPACTING HOW MUCH ICE IS ON LAKE MICHIGAN. THIS WAS THE ICE COVERAGE ON FEBRUARY 21, 42% OF THE GREAT LAKES WERE COVERED. COMPARE THAT TO LAST YEAR WHEN THE PEAK WAS JUST UNDER 20%. NOW, 16% OF THE LAKES ARE ICE COVERED. With many efforts already in progress to increase broadband connectivity in rural Michigan, another plan is in the works from one of the state’s congressmen.
U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar, who represents Michigan’s 4th Congressional district which covers parts of 15 counties in the central and northern regions of the Lower Peninsula, recently announced the Broadening Online Opportunities through Simple Technologies Act, which would help homeowners cover the cost of connecting online. ....

Although a career change can be somewhat daunting, Christie Bishop knew immediately she wanted to be part of the Hills and Dales General Hospital staff.

McLaren Thumb Region and Caro Region hospitals have updated their visitor restrictions thanks to the recent reduction of COVID-19 cases in the Upper Thumb region and across the state.
The new restrictions for visitors coming into McLaren include:
• Each inpatient and emergency room patient may have one healthy adult visitor
• Pediatric patients may have up to two healthy adult visitors, either parents or legal guardians.
• Obstetrical patients may have up to two support persons.
• Patients being evaluated for or on hospice care or nearing the end of life may have two visitors. ....

As part of continuing efforts to bring broadband internet to more rural parts of Michigan, state Rep. Phil Green recently introduced a proposal that would help make broadband more accessible.
Green’s proposal would eliminate sales and use taxes for broadband equipment, which would help bring down the costs for a broadband project.
“Lowering the cost makes every dollar go further and makes expensive rural projects more feasible,” Green said in a statement. “It’s another tool in the tool belt to bring more broadband investment to Michigan.” ....
