Regeneration will not be halted for the sake of a ‘heritage label’, says Joanne Anderson
Joanne Anderson told Building Design that the city will forge ahead with new developments without being “tied to the conditions of a heritage body with no idea who we are and what we are about”.
Unesco voted 13 to five in favour of removing Liverpool from the World Heritage Register at a meeting in China two weeks ago.
Joanne Anderson said that Liverpool will ‘always be a world heritage city’
The city had been engaged in a decade-long battle with the UN body whose world heritage committee said that too many inappropriate developments had been built around its historic waterfront. ....

Unesco can keep its pickling jars, writes David Rudlin
The defenestration of Liverpool by Unesco reminded me of the story of Manchester being the only city to campaign against World Heritage Site status.
Usually cities mount expensive campaigns to be recognised as World Heritage Sites. They are attracted by the kudos and tourism that comes from being ranked alongside sites like the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal and the Pyramids. Indeed one of the criticisms of the process is that rich western countries with the resources to assemble expensive bids are over-represented on the list. Not Manchester, whose decision to opt out of the process looks to have been validated by the recent humiliation of Liverpool. ....

Eric Parry Architects’ proposals for a £170m judicial complex in the City of London were approved today.
The City Corporation’s planning committee approved the scheme despite uproar over the proposed loss of historic buildings including cherished facades on Fleet Street, London’s famous newspaper district.
The development, which will replace an entire city block in a conservation area between Whitefriars Street and Salisbury Court on the south side of Fleet Street, will include a new headquarters for City of London Police, a courts complex and a commercial building to help fund the project. ....
