Norfolk expert says fun summer could help education recovery


She added: I think there are two problems with the idea of lengthening school days or terms. One is that the teachers have been flat out and they need a break.
“But secondly, if you start to eat into summers and evenings, you are taking away children s opportunities to do those extra things that are so important to them.  
“I’m not against children getting back to the classroom, I just think focusing only on that as a recovery plan misses what we know about children s wellbeing.”

Why lockdown homeschooling is proving tougher this time


Homeschooling in the latest coronavirus lockdown is proving tougher for many parents and children.

The closure of schools has turned the lives of families upside down for the second time in less than a year.
And if the first lockdown was a baptism by fire for families forced unwittingly into home classrooms while juggling remote work, the second time round it is proving tougher for many parents and children. 
“The novelty has worn off” says Helena Gillespie, professor of learning and teaching in higher education at UEA.
“There is a sense of tiredness and weariness that there wasn’t last spring and that is why it s important to put family wellbeing at the heart of homeschooling.” ....

'Learning on mum's phone' - Schools on homeschooling demand


Nevertheless some schools are struggling to address a digital divide that hits poorer pupils hardest, with research by the educational charity Teach First suggesting four of five schools with the poorest pupils do not have enough devices and internet access.
The Government said more than 560,000 laptop had been sent to schools for children to learn from home.

Pupils who have no access to laptops are designated as “vulnerable children”, the Department for Education has said, meaning they can continue attending school for face-to-face learning during lockdown.
Ms Fearns said: “More children are coming to light today that are working off mum’s phone, so I am not confident at the moment we have enough equipment to meet the need. ....
