There are many lessons that can be taken from the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the most important is the focus on community health and well-being. As we turn a corner and come to what is hopefully the end of the pandemic, both the mental and physical effects will be long-lasting.
The reality is each one of us has struggled in the last 16 months to one degree or another. Job loss and economic worries, the stress of remote work and classrooms, worries about the health of our loved ones, and the responsibilities of their care have stretched too many to the breaking point. Our caregivers — nurses, doctors, and health professionals — have been pushed beyond mere physical exhaustion and are struggling with the mental health impacts of responding to COVID-19. These are coupled with the unique challenges in our community with what has become an annual wildfire season impacting the beautiful Nap ....

Calistoga family struggles as infant with Down syndrome suffers brain damage

Little Omar (Omi) is only 4 months old, was born with Down syndrome, and has struggled with medical conditions.
On the morning of Tuesday, May 5, his mother, Judy Gonzalez Hernandez, drove him to the hospital in fear of dehydration after he had a bout of vomiting and not wanting to feed. Once they reached the hospital, Little Omi then went into cardiac arrest and ended up in critical condition fighting for his life.
He was then transported by helicopter to the Oakland Children s Hospital, and after many restless nights, doctors were able to save his life. Little Omi suffered a tremendous amount of brain damage that has also affected his vision and mobility and will remain in the hospital for many weeks to come.  ....

Rafael Rios, John Dunbar join race for Napa County District 3 supervisor


St. Helena attorney and Napa Valley College Trustee Rafael Rios III and Yountville Mayor John Dunbar are the fifth and sixth people to announce they are running for Diane Dillon’s seat on the Napa County Board of Supervisors.
Rios and Dunbar join a growing field of contenders also made up of St. Helena City Councilmember Anna Chouteau, Napa County Planning Commissioner Anne Cottrell, grapegrower Cio Perez, and Napa Valley College Trustee Ines DeLuna.
Dillon announced in January that she would not run for a sixth term after representing the vast District 3 since 2002.

Rios came to the Napa Valley from Mexico in 1968 after his family was granted permanent residency based on a petition from his father, who was working in California under the Bracero Program. He graduated from St. Helena High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture at UC Davis, a law degree from Santa Clara University, and an MBA in wine business from Sonom ....
