SOMERSET equestrians have failed in their efforts to secure an “inappropriate” right of way - straight across the busy A303.
The South Somerset Bridleway Association applied to get a contested bridleway across the dual carriageway at Sparkford added to the definitive rights of way map for the county – which lists all public footpaths and bridleways which can be used.
The campaign group said this would allow Highways England to put in a new footbridge for horses and pedestrians as part of mitigation when the A303 near Sparkford is dualled in the coming years. ....

PINS urged Shapps to can A303 scheme due to ‘adverse effect’ on local roads and communities
Transport secretary Grant Shapps went against the Planning Inspectorate’s (PINS) recommendation when he gave the green light to the £250M A303 dualling scheme between Sparkford and Ilchester last week.
It is the third time in recent months that Shapps has overruled the Inspectorate’s recommendation, having also done so when he approved the development consent order for the A303 Stonehenge Tunnel and when giving the go ahead to the A63 upgrade in Hull.
In its Examination report, the Planning Inspectorate urged Shapps to decline the DCO application on the grounds that the scheme would have “adverse effects” for local roads, would cut off local communities and was a risk to the natural and historical landscape (see below for Planning Inspectorate’s full list of concerns). ....

A congestion-busting upgrade to dual the A303 in the South West has been given the green light by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.
The upgrade, between Sparkford and Ilchester in Somerset, will tackle congestion on the traffic-clogged single carriageway section of the arterial route.
On an average day, the road carries 23,500 vehicles, but numbers increase significantly in the summer, particularly at weekends, making journeys unreliable and unpredictable. The road also is a key road for those travelling to and from Dorset with its links to the A37, especially in the Summer. ....
