Heavy rainfall cause damage to roads and houses in Kouga region
Several roads in St Francis Bay, Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp were damaged due to heavy rainfall and flooding in the area last week.
Heavy rains last week caused havoc across the Kouga region, damaging several houses and roads in the Eastern Cape.
Kouga Executive Mayor, Horatio Hendricks, said it is estimated that Jeffreys Bay received 75mm of rain, Humansdorp 100mm, St Francis Bay 97mm and Oyster Bay 87mm.
MOP UP OPERATIONS ARE UNDERWAY
The rain caused several potholes – some posing a danger to motorists – across the region.
“The municipality and the interim Joint Operations Committee (JOC) are in the process of assessing damages and putting mitigation measures in place,” said Hendricks. ....

Heavy rainfall experienced in the Kouga Region last week did not make any difference to plummeting dam levels in the area.
The Kouga Municipality has urged residents, businesses and visitors to use water wisely as combined dam levels have dropped below 12% despite heavy rainfall last week.
Last week heavy rains caused havoc across the Kouga region, damaging several houses and roads in the Eastern Cape.
COMBINED DAM LEVELS DROPPED TO 11.79%
According to the latest stats from Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the combined levels of the dams that supply water to the regions and Nelson Mandela Bay totalled 11.79% on May 10. ....

Wednesday evening’s storm saw up to 100mm of rain falling in some areas, but not enough to have much impact on the water-stressed region of Nelson Mandela Bay and the Kouga area where dams are predicted to run dry in the next few months.
Garth Sampson from Weather SA said that rainfall intensity and amounts were patchy east of Plettenberg Bay, with between 1mm and 45mm measured at different locations in the metro.
“It is difficult to determine what happened in the Kouga mountains, but in and around Kareedouw, between 30mm and 45mm were measured. There were reports of flooding in places in the area, as well as of unmelted ice pellets still visible in places. This will add additional run-off,” Sampson said. ....
