The Kouga Municipality has joined the Western Cape in challenging the decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa to close its beaches during the festive season.

Our premier in the Eastern Cape took a unilateral decision to ask the minister to close all beaches and, as Kouga Municipality, we were not a party to that decision. We are a coastal town, and we are dependent on tourism. We would have loved a more nuanced approach like in KwaZulu-Natal, where beaches are closed down on public holidays and scrapping large gatherings. ....

CAPE TOWN - The Kouga Municipality is not satisfied with government s decision to close all beaches in the Eastern Cape.
The municipality is now finalising an urgent application to the Eastern Cape High Court to overturn the move.
Earlier this week, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the closure of beaches across the Eastern Cape and the Garden Route in the Western Cape until 3 January in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus. ....

The Kouga municipality will fight for beaches to be opened, it announced on Thursday.
Kouga mayor Horatio Hendricks said the municipality would make a court bid to have the closure of the province’s beaches overturned.
Hendricks’s announcement follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration that all Eastern Cape beaches would be closed between December 16 and January 3.
“There are uncertainties caused by the regulations, with some references being wide open for adverse interpretation,” Hendricks said.
“These matters include the definition of ‘beach’ and engaging in water-based sports such as surfing. ....

The Eastern Cape’s seaside towns put on a brave face on Tuesday, with tourism organisations quickly jumping in to emphasise that there were many other things to do in the province instead of hitting the beach, but the cancellations kept on coming.
President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered the beach ban on Monday, 14 December as a part of stricter regulations to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections after a second wave hit several provinces. Ramaphosa said all beaches in the Eastern Cape would remain closed from 16 December for the duration of the festive season. The Garden Route’s beaches have also been closed, but KwaZulu-Natal’s beaches will be closed only on certain days. Other beaches in the Western Cape and Northern Cape will remain open. ....
