Corner Room Renovations Aim to Maintain Familiar Atmosphere While Providing 'Much Needed Upgrades'

The Corner Room is in the midst of an approximately two-week closure while the downtown restaurant undergoes renovations, making the oldest of the Hotel State College & Co. properties the latest to get some remodeling over the last year.
Curtis Shulman, director of operations for Hotel State College, said the work will refresh the restaurant at 100 W. College Ave. while maintaining the longstanding atmosphere of comfort and familiarity that has made it “the traditional meeting place since 1926” for generations of residents, Penn State students and visitors.
“We’re just bringing much-needed upgrades to the facility…,” Shulman said. “…Guests are really just going to feel a much fresher space. It’s still going to very much feel like The Corner Room and it’s our top priority to make sure we preserve that familiarity and charm.” ....

State College Borough Council Approves Seasonal 'Pedlet' for Outdoor Dining at Pickle's

State College Borough Council on Monday unanimously approved a license agreement that will allow a seasonal walkway that will support outdoor dining at Bill Pickle’s Taproom during warm weather months while also improving pedestrian access along South Allen Street.
The “pedlet,” will be in place from spring to fall within the two parking spaces directly in front of the 106 S. Allen St. tavern, connecting to the sidewalk and going around the Pickle’s seasonal outdoor deck. The walkway will be ADA accessible and have a fence along the street side.
Hotel State College & Co., which owns Pickle’s, will be responsible for constructing the pedlet no earlier than April 1 and removing it by Oct. 31. The company will pay a $125 a month license fee for use of the sidewalk as well as a fee to replace lost parking meter revenue. Borough Manager Tom Fountaine said the latter is still being calculated but is likely to be about $15 per day based on actual meter collections. ....

The State College Borough Council met virtually Monday night to unanimously approve the construction of a seasonal walkway that would promote outdoor dining at Bill Pickle’s Taproom during warm-weather months while also improving pedestrian access along South Allen Street.
The “pedlet” will be constructed and in place from spring to fall months where two parking spots in front of the restaurant at 106 S. Allen Street currently sit. It will essentially create a sidewalk that directs foot traffic around Pickle’s new outdoor dining area.
The pedlet will be constructed by Hotel State College & Co., which owns the establishment. The company will be responsible for constructing the pedlet no earlier than April 1 and removing it by October 31. ....

Hotel State College & Co. is seeking approval from State College Borough for a seasonal walkway that would support outdoor dining at Bill Pickle’s Taproom during warm weather months while also improving pedestrian access along South Allen Street.
The “pedlet,” would be in place from spring to fall within the two parking spaces directly in front of the 106 S. Allen St. tavern, connecting to the sidewalk and going around the Pickle’s seasonal outdoor deck.
In 2017, borough council approved a three-year agreement for Pickle’s to have an outdoor dining area extending into the sidewalk from April through the end of October. The deck allowed for a 5-foot clearance at the narrowest point on the sidewalk. ....
