Taiwan Ally Honduras May Turn to China for Coronavirus Vaccines

Honduras, an ally of Taiwan, may open a trade office in China to gain access to Chinese-made coronavirus vaccines, Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez said on Tuesday.
Honduras does not have a formal diplomatic relationship with China but is among just 15 countries in the world to maintain diplomatic ties with the nation of Taiwan, which China considers a renegade province.
Honduras is in need of Chinese coronavirus vaccines and may establish a “diplomatic bridge” with China to help convince Beijing to send the Latin American nation a shipment of Chinese-made vaccine candidates, President Hernandez said in a televised speech on May 11. Hernandez suggested that other Latin American nations that have formal ties to China such as El Salvador, Chile, or Mexico could help Honduras establish this “diplomatic bridge” with Beijing and thus help the nation secure Chinese-made vacc ....

Taipei, May 12 (CNA) Taiwan s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Wednesday it has been given assurance by the Honduran foreign minister that bilateral diplomatic ties with the Central American ally remain strong despite the Honduran President floating the possibility of opening a trade office in China in a bid to acquire COVID-19 vaccines.
In a televised speech Tuesday, President Juan Orlando Hernandez said his government was willing to do whatever was necessary to help its people during the global pandemic. ....

Honduran Authorities Unearth Tons of Buried Cocaine in Country's Northern Village

After being accused by the United States as the co-conspirator in drug trafficking, the Police in Honduras excavated 1.5 tons of cocaine buried in the ground of a small village in the northern portion of the country.
Based on the statement of the Honduran police, they have found around 1,450 packets of drugs. All of it was hidden inside 58 sacks buried in three large holes dug using heavy machinery. The drugs had apparently been brought to Francia, which is an area close to the coast.
According to WION, Miguel Perez, the head of the special forces police directorate, shared that the haul was the result of intelligence work and demonstrates the hard work done by the National Police Honduras in coordination with other institutions in the country. Perez also added that their target is to dismantle drug structures that operate in the country. ....
