He has spent an incredible two decades as a Wildcare volunteer, and nearly as long as a Bushcare volunteer. And his efforts, as well as his patient and gentle manner with fellow volunteers, have been recognised in this year’s Tasmanian Volunteering Awards. It’s estimated that Greg (pictured) has taken part in up to 400 Bushcare activities over the years. A retired teacher, he also volunteers extensively at schools, and has helped students build nest boxes for swift parrots, control weeds and create and maintain native bushland sanctuaries on school grounds. ....
Date Time Colourful crafts celebrate Japan Children’s Day Colourful decorations handmade by more than 1000 Tasmanian students will be showcased as part of a celebration of Japan Children’s Day. More than 600 decorations are today being installed in the picturesque Japanese Gardens within the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens in the lead up to Japan Children’s Day on 5 May. Fourteen schools from across Southern Tasmania have contributed to the project through the creation of handcrafted decorations known as koinobori, comprising carp-shaped wind-socks and streamers, with written works to be displayed in the Japanese Gardens. “Children’s Day in Japan is a national holiday and a time to respect children’s personalities and celebrate their resilience, health and happiness,” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said. ....
