Assistant Minister for Industry Development Jonno Duniam says tourism businesses across Tasmania will benefit from an influx of tourists from the Morrison Government’s 800,000 half-price airfare tickets, as part of the $1.2 billion tourism and aviation package.
Burnie, Devonport, Launceston and Hobart are among the initial 15 regions that the Government is supporting through its discounted airfares initiative.
Assistant Minister Duniam said over 100,000 tickets had been snapped up in the 12 hours since the airfares went on sale.
“Tasmania’s tourism industry was hit hard by the pandemic, but our tourism operators are resilient, and we will do whatever we can to help them bounce back,” Assistant Minister Duniam said. ....

An expansion of social and affordable housing is urgently needed to avoid a fresh housing affordability crisis as new figures confirm Australia is in the middle of a new real estate boom.
According to the latest CoreLogic report released today, Sydney home prices surged by 3.7 per cent in March, the fastest monthly rise in 33 years.
There were similar increases across the country with property prices jumping 2.4 per cent in Melbourne and Brisbane, 1.5 per cent in Adelaide and 1.8 per cent in Perth.
Prices have increased by 3.3 per cent in Hobart in the past month, 2.3 per cent in Darwin, 2.8 per cent in Canberra and 2.8 per cent nationally. ....

New Port Stephens reef to boost marine life and local economy

The Morrison Government is delivering on a $20 million commitment to rebuild native shell reefs, support local jobs and boost tourism with a three-hectare site at Port Stephens nearing completion.
The transformation of a disused oyster lease in Port Stephens to a thriving native shellfish reef that will boost fish stocks, improve water quality and help protect the coastline from erosion and the impacts of extreme weather will have the last of 4200 tonnes of rock laid in coming weeks.
Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said Port Stephens would be the first of 13 Reefs to be completed around the country helping to restore a network of native shellfish reefs that will support precious marine eco systems and increase fish stocks in regions impacted by last year’s bushfires and now, in some cases floods. ....

A Hollywood actor and three popular local cover bands are among the upcoming shows planned at the Hobart Art Theatre in downtown Hobart.
The vintage Art Deco movie theater at 230 Main St. will host the 1990s dance party band Fool House on Friday, Soundz of Santana on Saturday, American English on April 9 and Jeremy Piven on May 13.
Green Door Books is writing its next chapter. The used bookstore, known for its art shows, $1 books, extensive zine library and namesake green door, is moving to a bigger spot in downtown Hobart after the local chain Toys in the Attic bowed out. ....
