Several fire trucks are seen as smoke billows from an industrial building that caught fire Tuesday in Morris, Illinois.
A fire in an industrial building has released smoke and poisonous fumes and forced evacuations in the town of Morris on Tuesday, and as residents continue to be asked not to return to their homes, the Red Cross has set up an overnight shelter in the community.
Volunteers from the organization are also providing food and water to more than 300 emergency personnel who are battling the blaze, which started Tuesday morning in the community.

Moving on in Chicago suburbs tornado aftermath - Chicago Sun-Times

Rich Hein/Sun-Times
A Naperville resident on Hedg Court had just finished reading his book and turned off his bedroom light at 11:01 p.m. when Sunday’s tornado hit at 11:03 p.m. He didn’t hear any warning sirens or receive any cellphone notifications about the storm.
“All of a sudden, I hear this high wind and then a loud roar,” said Michel Laurent, who has lived in Naperville 18 years. “The house was shaking. I knew right there that this was not your normal thunderstorm. I went to the window, which was not a wise thing to do, when I saw the tree and the lightning surge. It was almost like a black-and-white silver screen in my mind.”

Gold Star Memorial Remembrance Ceremony to resume Saturday, May 29 | News, Sports, Jobs

May 12, 2021
After a year of COVID-related interruption, the Blue Star Mothers New York Chapter 4 will resume its annual Gold Star Memorial Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday, May 29, at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park on West Third and Logan streets in Jamestown.
Held annually the Saturday before Memorial Day, the Blue Star Mothers will honor in remembrance those Western New York residents who have died in the service of the United States by memorializing them and acknowledging their Gold Star families left behind. Originally established in May 2013, and desiring that these sacrifices never be forgotten, the local Blue Star Mothers Chapter has secured the privilege of commemorating Western New York’s local Gold Star families with a memorial display, serving as a daily visual remembrance. The memorial established by the Blue Star Mothers at Veterans Memorial Park includes a rock with a bronze plaque honoring the fallen, surrounded by annually-flowering cherry trees, bearing living testament to the sacrifices made.

Feral cats find shelter thanks to Gloversville woman

GLOVERSVILLE – Many stray and feral cats have found homes in cat shelters dotted throughout the greater Capital Region thanks in part to Angel Mariani.
The Gloversville resident has made several hundred of the shelters over the years, using blankets and bins filled with straw. She often gives them to people who reach out to her on Facebook.
“They are life-saving. [For] cats out there that don’t have a warm home, it is a very rough winter,” Mariani said.
Mariani has had a passion for animals since she was a child and remembers her father bringing home stray cats when she was growing up. While the work that she does with the cat shelters is independent, she volunteers with animal organizations like Kitten Angels and runs a Facebook group called Kitty Connection dedicated to educating people about cats and how to care for them. She also runs fundraisers on the social media platform for those who can’t afford to pay for their cat’s medical bills, or for injured feral cats she comes across that need medical attention.
