ATLANTA Atlanta City Council is considering a proposal to require all new commercial and residential buildings to install exterior cameras.
The cameras would have to be compatible with the Atlanta Police Department s Video Integration Center, giving the police department full access to the footage.

Residents of ritzy Atlanta suburb push for separate police force as crime rages in 'war zone': neighbor

A seemingly unprovoked weekend violence spree through
Atlanta’s ritzy Buckhead neighborhood has highlighted what area officials see as a need for more security and public safety protocols, as the recent crime jump has made some residents too scared to even pump gas at certain places, Fox News has learned.
On Thursday, the Buckhead City Committee, formerly the Buckhead Exploratory Committee, will be demanding emergency hearings as part of its ongoing effort to become a separate entity from the city of Atlanta, said Bill White, the group’s CEO and chairman.
Given everything that s been going on here, it s getting worse and worse and worse, White told Fox News on Wednesday. So what we re doing because of the murders going through the roof and the attempted murders, and the lack of leadership and nothing changing – the insanity continues – is we re demanding emergency hearings on our cityhood bills. ....

Investigation into Atlanta jail history and debate over closing

An Atlanta building, barely a quarter-century old, stands tall on the cities south side. But it s the history and the communities battle over the building that casts an even bigger shadow.
Built in the 90s as Atlanta won the bid to host the Olympics, the Atlanta City Detention Center made national headlines.
It was made to house low-risk individuals who violate city ordinances. Around the same time, the city passed an ordinance that made loitering a new punishable offense.
The community pushed back saying it was a way to penalize the homeless population and rid the city streets of them.  ....

Accused street racer's license suspended

Accused street racer s license suspended
A street racer s license is being suspended after police say officers caught him going 143 mph.
ATLANTA - An Atlanta area court is attempting to make punishment stick for street racers who have been charged with multiple traffic violations. The action is in response to strategies that have had little impact.
And just on Sunday, along Mt. Paran in northwest Atlanta, drivers were out again in a residential neighborhood putting on a performance burning rubber, smoke billowing from donuts, or lane drag. That is driving in circles, engine accelerated.
The Atlanta court took action against a young man 19 years old at the time who was cited for doing donuts in a separate incident. That infraction followed an earlier traffic incident in which Antonio Ojeda was clocked speeding excessively. How fast? ....

Atlanta police officers to get bonuses

Atlanta police officers to get bonuses
The Atlanta City Council has taken steps to improve the city s police morale by approving bonuses.
ATLANTA - Some extra cash for the younger police officers in Atlanta may be one more argument to persuade them to remain with the Atlanta force.
That is what Howard Shook was thinking when he first proposed a retention bonus program late in 2020.
He put the figures together and this week his colleagues on the Atlanta City Council, and Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, got behind his proposal.
The bonuses will be awarded to young and mid-career cops. The amounts range from $1,200 to $2,500. ....
