My Turn: Reading with you

It wasn’t my idea, although I’d like to take credit. As it turned out, it was a very good idea, and who doesn’t want to own the good ideas? But in truth, it was your idea.
It was also a timely idea that would nourish and keep us company through the pandemic. We couldn’t meet together for a Sunday brunch or enjoy a slow hike with the discoveries you’d point out. We could no longer gather in the warmth of a wood fire and stare out through the glass doors at the circling wood ducks on the pond below. But we could read. ....

Hobart :: Things Women Do Out Of Politeness

Leave it to Beaver fantasy household we were not, that’s what our mothers would have done.
Accept the ride offered to us when we were teenagers hitchhiking in the early 1970s, even though we had a funny feeling about the oily-haired driver with a trash-bag stuffed with, he bragged,
more pot than you ladies could dream of.
Take the kiss when we were in our early twenties from the pale, pock-faced soldier sitting next to us on a plane, on his way to be deployed to Grenada, after he had asked if he could, and we said no even as our mental viewfinder flashed: Marlene Dietrich kissing the shirtless soldier through the window of a train, a soldier kissing Miss World on a Bob Hope tour, and the V-J Day Times Square photograph of the returning sailor kissing the nurse. Unaware that the woman would reveal later: the sailor, a stranger, had grabbed her, and ....

With "Empty Stages," the Champlain Trio Illustrates Performance in a Pandemic | Performing Arts | Seven Days

The Champlain Trio, from left: Letitia Quante, Emily Taubl and Hiromi Fukuda
Six pandemic-endangered performance venues are the settings for Empty Stages: Performances and Stories of Resilience, a mini-documentary series created earlier this year by Vermont filmmaker Jay Craven. The riveting performers on those stages are the members of the Champlain Trio, a year-old Vermont chamber group.
In one moment that occurs in the final episode, pianist Hiromi Fukuda, seen in profile, cuts a glance toward cellist Emily Taubl and violinist Letitia Quante. They re playing the second movement of Felix Mendelssohn s Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor. As the music slows, all three musicians, absorbed in the emotion of the piece, move in unison toward the next phrase. ....

“I also loved to read in swimming pools, pre-Covid, when vacations were a thing,” says the novelist, whose latest book is “Hour of the Witch.”
What books are on your night stand?
I’m old school and don’t read on a tablet, and so my night stand is a Jenga tower of galleys and manuscripts for books that won’t be published for months. It’s terrifying. One night, it’s going to collapse and kill me in my sleep. There are always at least one or two books that are research for whatever novel I’m writing, which means in this case I have a book about skydiving and a book about the Ottoman massacre of Armenians in Adana, Turkey, in 1909. But three novels were recently published that I’d been looking forward to, and so amid the unstable skyscraper are Carol Edgarian’s “Vera”; Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Klara and the Sun”; and Viet Thanh Nguyen’s “The Committed. ....
