Bill to end new contracts on private prisons passes House committee


“But a way forward on this issue so many in New Mexico care about,” Romero said.
Rep. Linda Serrato, D-Santa Fe, who is the lead sponsor on HB 352, said the private prison population has “skyrocketed” since 2000, even as incarceration rates have declined.
According to the Prison Policy Initiative, the numbers of those in local county jails has increased due to more people being arrested for minor crimes and the inability of people to make bail.
Rep. Stefani Lord, R-Sandia Park, who voted, along with Rep. Randall Pedigrew, R-Hobbs, against the bill, said she was concerned about the town of Estancia. ....

One of the big stories to come out of the Roundhouse yesterday actually involves Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. State Auditor Brian Colon announced that he was moving ahead with a special audit of the Governor s discretionary fund, after local reporting discovered more than $13,000 in groceries, liquor purchases and dry cleaning over a six-month period in 2020. A group of Republican lawmakers also requested the audit in a letter to Auditor Colon. The Governor s office has said the purchases were appropriate but may have been excessive at times.
 
In the House, we saw movement on HB 111 which would offer new protections to tenants in the middle of an emergency like the ongoing pandemic.  ....

Pending legislation could push area boaters off the Willamette

Proposed bills would restrict towing sports, including in the popular Newberg Pool section of the river
Oregon House Bill 2555 is directly tied to a 20-mile stretch of the Willamette River, but if passed, its ripple effects could be felt as far as Hagg Lake in rural Washington County.
The proposed legislation is aimed at the Newberg Pool and would restrict towing people on wakeboards, wake surfers and inner tubes to name a few to boats not exceeding 4,000 pounds.
The Newberg Pool is the part of the Willamette River roughly between Newberg and Willamette Falls in Oregon City. It is a popular place for area boaters. ....
