Detailed description is Selling my late Husband's collection. This 1971 Bus is one of many. A little about why this page exists.. . Jack Smart, also known as Dirty Gertie, the sole proprietor of Gertie’s VW Racing and Repair, formerly of San Jose California from 1970 through 1989 , The Bug Doctor , later named the Bus Stop, most recently of the Bellingham Washington area from 1990 though 2015, recently passed away.. . Jack was an avid VW enthusiast, specialist and all-round great guy. The President of the Mt. Baker Vintage VW Club once called him “VW Royalty of Whatcom County.” Jack’s expertise spanned from off- road racing, dirt road-course, and asphalt and circle dirt racing with two California State Championships driving his self-built/engineered engines in the VW Super Sedan class in his beloved Karmen Ghias, to building high performance engines for racing and street cars, to all areas of VW, air cooled repair. Jack was the kind of guy who, almost always knew right off the bat, what was wrong with an engine by just listening to it and driving it.. . He collected bugs, buses, campers, weekenders, and vanagons, with splitties and bay windows being his favorites. It would appear at a close look, that he was intent on single handedley saving as many old VWs as possible. Jack’s plan was that when he retired he would restore the 32 assorted, mostly air-cooled vans and the 18 air-cooled bugs he had collected over the years. Those were the ones he had decided were the best of what he had collected. The rest had been stripped, stacked and stored for use in the restoration of the keepers. Over the years, however, Jack’s love of the air-cooled VW engines and the cars they lived in, became an unsurpassed passion that grew exponentially.. . Jack’s time however, sadly ran out on February 28, 2015.. . Now we, his family, are doing our best to allow his legacy to live on by finding homes for all his vehicles, and the dairy barn and walk in storage containers full of parts from engines, tyranny’s and front suspensions to body parts of every description, to new and used engine re-building parts. . We’re hoping to do this by allowing them to leave at below common wholesale prices, but still show the respect due Jack’s lifetime of work and dedication by not giving away his legacy.. . As you look at the pictures and videos, if you see anything that interests you, don’t hesitate to Personal Message us from this site. We’ll do all we can to get you the items you want for a price we can each agree upon.. . Francie Smart (Mrs. Jack)
