Detailed description is Sleep is a basic necessity for life and mind, but so many do not get the sleep that they need. More than 60 million Americans struggle with one or more of over 80 known sleep disorders, creating a greater need for sleep medicine. . . Polysomnographic technologists are at the forefront of this growing field of medicine, as they conduct the sleep studies that allow physicians to diagnose and treat patients suffering from sleep disorders. In Fall 2012, Collin College began offering a Polysomnographic Technology program. The program prepares individuals for an allied health specialty in the clinical care and management of sleep disorders.. . The Polysomnographic Technology Program offers two tracks depending on the student’s healthcare background. The 22-month Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree track is for those without a healthcare background and totals 60 credit hours. The nine-month Certificate track totals 28 credit hours and is for individuals who have an associates or higher degree in a healthcare field and are board registered in their respective healthcare field. The Certificate track is also open to board registered polysomnographic technologists (RPSGT) who were on-the-job trained and registered EEG techs (REEGT) who wish to pursue a formal education in polysomnography. . . The Collin College Polysomnographic Technology Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation for Polysomnographic Technologist Education (www.coapsg.org).. .
