Detailed description is Union local for the career fire personnel of the City of Uniontown Bureau of Fire Union local of the International Association of Firefighters, representing the career fire personnel of the City of Uniontown Bureau of Fire. Our local is a member of the Pennsylvania Professional Firefighters Association as well. Our department is a combination type fire department consisting of members of this local who are employed by the city, along with volunteer members belonging to one of three companies within the bureau, and employees of a fully staffed advanced life support non profit ambulance service that is owned and administered by the fire department. The city was once a very bustling town in the heyday of the coal industry. While population and local businesses have declined a good bit over the years, the city still holds it's own, and is home to a number of local businesses along with a shopping center with "big box" tenants, a good number of eateries/restaurants/taverns, offices and professional services, a hospital and several health care facilities, and of course residential areas just to name a few. We have a very large number of highrise buildings for a city of our size, and protect a good number of "taxpayer" type buildings and a few "big box" buildings as well, along with many other building types in our response area. We do have a cultural district and a large theater, the county courthouse, county prison, hospital, and a number of schools within the city that at times have a high population, so life safety, especially in dealing with crowds, is a concern we face as well. Our population density is over 6,000 persons per square mile, therefore in many of our residential districts, we face exposure problems with the houses so close together. Along with fire suppression activities, members of Local L-0955 are involved in providing public fire education, inspection services, training, and responses to other types of incidents such as extrication and rescue, hazardous materials, public services, and other common types of incidents fire departments typically respond on. Members are well trained and hold a number of professional qualifications certifications, along with one member of the local also being a PA Fire Academy Local Level Instructor, and a number of the members being certification testing evaluators for pro baord testing under the Office of the State Fire Commissioner. The department has received recognition as a participating department from the fire commissioners office for our membership's certifications through the Pro Board/IFSAC certification testing. We staff three Engines, and an Aerial Truck. The department also has reserve engines and a reserve aerial that career personnel staff when a callback is placed for working fires. As well, the department also has a heavy rescue unit that is staffed when needed by on duty personnel and/or volunteer members. The ambulance corps staffs two ALS units around the clock as well.
