The Still - A Family Legacy Foundation will promote, restore & preserve.
The Education Center at the Dr.
James Still Historic Office Site, located at the adjacent properties of 209-211 Church Road, Medford, NJ, is owned by the State of New Jersey, as its first African-American heritage site purchase.
Through the authority of a Special Use Permit signed with the State of NJ in June 2013, the Medford Historical Society maintains and oversees the properties and their dedicated use as an educational center committed to preserving the legacy of Dr.
James Still..

Governance and oversight is provided through an Advisory Committee of the Medford Historical Society with members that include descendants of Dr.
James Still, educators, State of NJ Parks & Forests management, Township BOE Administration, and Trustees of the Medford Historical Society.
Bill Stauts, President of MHS, is the Chair of the Dr.
James Still Advisory Committee.

Dr.
James Still (1812-1882), a renowned herbalist and homeopathic healer often called “The Black Doctor if the Pines, was born at Indian Mills and resided in Burlington County most of his life.
He was one of 18 children born to former slaves Levin and Charity Still.
His brothers included abolitionist William Still, one of the founders of the Underground Railroad, and Peter Still, who rescued himself from slavery..

Born into poverty and mostly self-educated, James Still became one of the wealthiest men in Burlington County and owned land along Church Road in Medford from Cross Roads, the intersection of Church and Mt.
Holly Roads, to Wilkins Station.
He built a fine house with a small office next door and developed a hospital in an old tavern on Route 541.
He married twice and had eight children..

James Still’s story was one of hard work, thrift and saving.
He prospered through his own industry and gave much of the credit to Providence.
He and his family experienced poverty and prejudice, but persevered with faith, modesty and frugality.
Dr.
Still recorded the story of his life and philosophy in an autobiography published in 1877..

New Jersey purchased the Still office and grounds in 2005.
Dr.
Still’s property is the first African-American historical property acquired for preservation and interpretation.
The State also bought the Bunning Farm located immediately to the east of the Still property, envisioning it as a buffer and interpretive site.

A Preservation Plan was developed for the New Jersey Historical Trust and published in 2009.
The plan provided background on the Still family and the Doctor’s herbal practices and analyzed the condition of the building’s interior and exterior.
It also presented a three-tiered recommendation and cost analysis for stabilization, preservation-investigation and restoration.
An archaeological survey was also included.
However, and despite intense local interest, the Still site languished.
A change of administration in Trenton and accompanying staff realignment resulted in its virtual abandonment..

Getting Started! .
All of that changed in mid-2012, and that change came from outside rather than within.
Inspired by stories shared by Still family members, interest in and enthusiasm for the creation of the Dr.
James Still Preservation Project grew.
By early 2013, with great enthusiasm, bundled in coats and hats for protection from the January weather, nearly 100 volunteers from the Medford community worked side by side with Still family members to begin preparing the properties at 209 and 211 Church Road for historic restoration and rehabilitation.
Almost single-mindedly, the team focused on telling the story of one of Medford Township’s most notable citizens: Dr.
James Still, known as “The Doctor of the Pines”.
With no other thought than preserving Dr.
Still’s legacy for generations to come, planning continued throughout the following months.

In June 2013, Medford Historical Society signed a Special Use Permit with the State of New Jersey to allow them to combine and repurpose the two properties at 209 and 211 Church Road into an educational center that would preserve the legacy of Dr.
James Still.

Medford Historical Society now is leading a successful effort to reclaim 209-211 Church Road for generations to come.
Through the donations of time, talent, and goods of hundreds of volunteers of all ages, the 1912 Bunning farmhouse has become an educational and cultural center that will tell the Still Family Story through workshops, displays, and seminars, and the surrounding grounds will hold a historic garden in tribute to Dr.
Still’s work and an edible garden to harvest for the hungry in the area, in tribute to his life of service.
Additionally and importantly, Dr.
Still’s Medical Office is slated to be restored to its original condition..

No State or Township funds are allocated for this project, so Medford Historical Society has relied on the generosity of community volunteers, business, and non-profit community groups to bring the Center to life.
Our primary sponsors to date include ShopRite of Medford, Medford Leas, the Medford Company Store, and INTELCO.

The volunteer teams reflect the community.
It is not unusual to stop by on a Saturday work day to find volunteers of all ages working side by side: 9 year old Emma helping move things to create work space, 13 year old Matt helping a retired educator and Chief pull out the old fence, painters work in all rooms on walls and ceilings, the MHS president repairing the plumbing, Ray, retired Civil Engineer, ensuring Center safety, Shawnee soccer team members and Seneca students working without complaint carrying toilets and other debris to the curb, detectives and carpenters removing cabinets that can’t be saved, and on and on.

Lowe’s Heroes have also honored the MHS Center for Education as their selected project for 2013.
On September 13, 2013, volunteers from Lowe’s partnered with members of the community and local businesses, such as Wehner Contracting, to transform the grounds and front porch of the Bunning farm house.

What’s Next for the Center?.

With the farmhouse already at work providing special events and educational programs, that course has been set.
The grounds immediately around the new Center have a Children’s Garden and Tree Stump Amphitheatre installed by Lowe’s Heroes Projects and three historic gardens installed by Eagle Scout candidate, Matt Williamson.
Next, the Sunrise Rotary will be installing a picnic area with picnic tables donated by Peter Lumber and will also be painting the badly peeling painted addition to the Center.
The State Department of Parks and Forestry will be installing an ADA walkway that will connect the two properties so that the larger vision of an educational center that embraces Dr.
James Still’s historic medical office and the rehabilitated farm house will be clear.
With this expanded functional area, plans are underway to include raised historic gardens, signage, nature trails, and educational stations connecting the two properties and fulfilling its single mission of preserving Dr.
James Still's legacy..
