Detailed description is www.hfotusa.org Navy Petty Officer First Class Ryan Sykes was on his fifth deployment when he suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury in a motorcycle accident in Jalalabad, Afghanistan in March 2008.
While riding across base late in the evening, PO1 Sykes’s motorcycle flipped in an unlit area where he lay unconscious and unnoticed for more than five hours until being found by some local Afghanis who alerted American troops.
Suffering from a collapsed lung, facial fractures, Traumatic Brain Injury and Hypothermia, PO1 Sykes was saved from further brain injury due to the freezing outside temperatures that limited the swelling of his brain.
Airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany, PO1 Sykes began a multi-hospital journey on his road to recovery.
Transferred to Walter Reed, Ryan spent 2 weeks in treatment before being transferred to the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA in Virginia where he spent 4 months in therapies and treatments.
Eventually transported to QLI in Omaha, Nebraska, Ryan spent 6 months recovering and was then transferred to the Hyperbaric Medicine Center in Salt Lake City, Utah where he stayed for 4 months.
Presently, Ryan continues following a therapeutic treatment plan while living in San Ramon, CA.
