Detailed description is A non-profit organization for the indigenous tribes of Mexico.
It began as a simple Catholic Youth Group Mission Trip.
We stayed at an orphanage in Juarez and helped build a couple of homes for needy families.
During one of our trips, one of the homes we built was for a Tarahumara woman, and her home was located in a small community of Tarahumara located on a hill above Juarez.
We found the community intriguing but disturbing.
We had all seen poverty.
There were areas of poverty we were familiar with in the United States.
Our visits to Mexico had shown us a poverty that was more extreme.
However, the poverty in the colony was beyond even that.
Many of the homes were merely pallets and blankets.
The kids fought to stand in line for the treats that we brought.
They were truly hungry.
We began to learn about the Tarahumara and their colony..
To understand the problem you must know where these people came from and why they have come to the cities.
The Tarahumara come from the canyons of the Sierra Madre.
The drug industry now uses the canyons for marijuana and poppy farms, so many of the Tarahumara are no longer welcome to raise their corn and beans.
And, the last few years of farming have been rough due to drought.
They have come to the cities in search of work so that they might eat.

Unfortumately, they are not prepared for the city and the city is not prepared for them.
Most Tarahumara women still wear the multicolored head scarves and dresses, and the men still prefer the headbands although most now wear jeans instead of traditional tribal wear.
They have no education and speak little Spanish.
Their rituals and ceremonies seem strange and out of place to the people of the city.
They gather in colonies on the edges of the city, in pallet and blanket homes, and do their best to survive.
A few groups visit and help--the colony we work with now has a small school, a clinic, a gathering place, and a church.
However, with tougher economic issues in the States, many groups never return to help a second time.
All agree that the biggest problem is adequate housing and education.
And, care must be taken to preserve the traditions, heritage and language of the people while giving them the skills and tools to survive.

We have continued to visit and work as a non-denominational group of adults and teenagers that just want to help.
We have obtained our tax exempt status with the IRS so that we might broaden the scope of our assistance..
