Detailed description is American Vogue: Lessons Learned From Having Once Worked There.. . 1) What Vogue Staffers Knew to Get the Job, and What You Should Know Too. . 2) What Vogue Staffers Knew to Survive & Flourish on the Job. . 3) Life Lessons Learned at Vogue that Apply to Absolutely Any Work Setting. . ...and more.. . INTRODUCTION:. . What can you say about a place where champagne was on the weekly office supplies order form? Where a six-foot long hot-pink feather boa was Monday morning office wear? One where nude nylon hosiery was banned for its 'classless qualities"? A place that had its own voice coach? Where the Publisher at the time was the real Mr. Big of "Sex and The City" fame? Where making everything look absurdly easy was the very measure of success, and whose insiders understood by osmosis just how things are done? . . What would you call this place? American Vogue.. . Are some people simply born ready to work at Vogue? A few. They've known "Oscar" (de la Renta) since birth, they spent summers in college assisting (photographer) Bruce Weber, and oh "Mark and James" (Badgely Mischka) just insisted on making their wedding dress.. . But the others at Vogue--- shiny, chic, long, lean and flaunting that air of confidence so unique to this particular place--- are they us, just the new-and-improved variety? Are these same people, who arrived day one as mere mortals, actively made by Vogue into its own image, from the inside out? They are.. . I witnessed many a remarkable transformation at Vogue, including my own. And since there were only about one hundred of us on staff at the time, it was impossible to avoid the spotlight of judgement, first as an inductee into the process and then as a contributor among many to this indoctrination itself.. . There was no playbook or primer filled with insider's information. If such a thing had existed, it would have been helpful. Instead, the transformation took place in the form of a very public and painful initiation into Vogue as state of mind and physical being. The most sophisticated sororities and secret societies in the land have nothing on Vogue.. . The process was stressful and straining, yet there was light at the end of the tunnel. We learned to confront difficulty and rebound with resilience. In the end, Vogue's survivors learned that style is always personal and polished, being super smart is cool, and that aspiring to the highest levels of organized is only everything.. . Having once survived Vogue as-boot-camp, I see myself as a beneficiary of a formal education, and one that packaged executive functioning with social polishing. I finally understand the true depth and magnitude of this education's value, and appreciate that few people get to experience it first hand. And as it turns out, everything I need to know, I learned at Vogue.. . Please "Like" if you are interested in reading more in the coming weeks and months..
