Our family farm is located in Maine’s Dairy Capital of Clinton! Flood Bros. family dairy farm has been in agricultural production for over 200 years and is currently operated by 3 generations of family members. The dairy first shipped milk as a commercial operation in 1927 under George Flood, Sr., who was 14 at the time, and over the next 85 years the farm has grown and changed with the times and is now currently owned and operated by his sons George Flood, Jr. and William Flood along with their families and 40+ employees. . When they purchased the farm from their parents in 1980 George Jr. and Bill both had young families and were keen on continuing the tradition of quality milk production and growth. At the time of the transfer the dairy was milking approx. 300 cows in a double 12 Surge herringbone. By the end the decade a half dozen barns were built, the herd size doubled, and a 50 stall Roto-Flow rotary parlor was in production. Over the next 20 years another 10 buildings and barns were constructed; the milking herd increased to 1600, with 3400 head overall; corn acreage quadrupled to 2000 acres and a 100 stall DeLaval rotary parlour built.. Our family farm produces 5% of Maine's milk and is one of 6 family farms in our town, which together produces 15% of Maine's milk earning our town the title of "Maine's Dairy Capital". We raise 2000 acres of corn for silage and harvest 3000 of grass 2-3 times a season for haylage. . Currently the farm is milking 1600 cows, 3x a day. Daily production averages 130,000 lbs/day (15,000 gallons of fresh, local, high-quality milk a day) and cows average 85-90lbs/day and produce almost 5% of Maine’s milk. Cows are milked in the recently constructed 100 stall DeLaval rotary parlour and cow records are managed with computer software and a combination of automatic ID, record keeping and data entry and housed in one of the 13 barns where they are grouped by the level of their production and stage of lactation. All dairy barns are free stall layouts (stalls with comfortable, dry and clean bedding in which the cows are free to roam and choose their own bed). Some specific herds, like the maternity pen, are housed in a pack configuration with ample, clean and dry bedding and plenty of room to lounge about comfortably. Forages raised by the farm include 2000 acres of corn and 3000 acres of haylage(which is cut 2-3 times a year) are raised and harvested by the farm and mixed with grains and minerals in custom batches for a TMR (Total Mixed Ration) formulated by nutritionists to meet the specific needs of each group and fed at least once a day in bunks and awaiting the girls as they return from their work in the parlour. All cows have free choice and can eat whenever they choose ensuring their appetite is met when they prefer. Our cows' daily intake averages around 120 lbs of feed/day.. Along with ‘round the clock access to feed the cows also have water available at all times (Our cows drink at least a bathtub of water a day). Along with all this good nutrition and hard work producing fresh, quality milk these cows also produce manure…on a regular basis! (A good dairy cow can produce about 100lbs of manure a day) Barns are cleaned out at each milking with manure being transferred by pump or machinery to one of 3 manure pits/lagoons and spread on the forage ground as part of the farm’s Nutrient Management Program.. Flood Bros.Farm is a proud Agri-Mark Co-Op member/producer and our fresh, quality milk is shipped directly to H.P. Hood and consistently earns Quality Awards. Over the past 30 years George and Bill have made a concerted effort to expand the farm in a manner to support and provide for their families as well as their employees; maintain the integrity of their father’s original drive and vision; milk the finest of animals and provide the highest quality of milk all while being the best stewards of the land they can and pass the farm to the younger generation in order to continue this two centuries old tradition.. Throughout the state of Maine there are close to 305 dairy farms that help generate over $570 million dollars each year for the state’s economy, contribute over $25 million dollars to the state and municipal government in taxes and provide over 4000 jobs for Maine people.. These family farms are small businesses which depend on other businesses such as grain dealers, equipment dealers, milk truck haulers, veterinarians, cattle dealers, and other cattle and dairy specialists and are an integral asset to Maine’s economic landscape. They also represent 700,000 acres of fields, pastures, crop lands, and small woodlots in Maine, which is not only important to the state’s number one industry tourism, but are needed for outdoor sports activities and provide open space.. Our family farm is proud to be part of Maine’s Dairy and Agricultural Industry. Our commitment to our families, animals and environment is our priority and we pride ourselves on our efforts and achievements and look forward to opportunities to share this commitment to our way of life by welcoming visitors to the farm. Family members are always on site and available to answer questions. . We are very proud of the care we provide to our animals, our stewardship of the land and the milk and dairy products we put on our neighbours table and encourage you to make the conscious choice to support your local family farmer!!.
