For many years Florida has been ranked at the bottom in the country in providing Dental care for children living in poverty.
One of the main problems is that only 15 percent of Florida Dentist accepts Medicaid patients due to the low reimbursement rates.
Dental decay has been a problem with the children in St.
Lucie County for many years.
The St.
Lucie County school nurses and health care professionals noticed that many children were coming into the school clinics with dental pain.
In 2008, volunteer Dentists screened 843 first graders in 8 schools in St.
Lucie County.
The results of those screenings showed that 46% of those children had dental decay.
The problem and barriers to dental care in St.
Lucie County are lack of dental facilities that take Medicaid, lack of education, transportation, poverty, and difficulty in navigating complex Medicaid system.
A group of community leaders came together and decided to do something about this problem in the community.
The HANDS Volunteer Clinic of St.
Lucie County was born followed up by the HANDS Pediatric Dental Program I 2010.An estimated 51 million school hours per year are lost because of dental-related illness.In 2008 843 first graders were screened and more than 50% of children had dental decay.
In 2010 the initial year of the program 52% of children screened needed to see a Dentist for treatment.
Dental disease is 100% preventable.
The HANDS Pediatric Dental Program focuses on preventive services as the most cost effective way to provide dental care for children.
We perform dental screenings; provide education, case management, dental sealants, and fluoride treatments.
We help children and parents navigate through the system to get dental care.
Our program also helps children who are uninsured or cannot afford treatment with insurance.
This program is very cost effective the values of services received this coming school year would normally cost $575,000 for 10,000 children.
The cost of our program is $10 per child which is $100,000 for 10,000.
