Detailed description is To promote the study and practice of Chun Kuhn Taekwondo; to encourage respect, cooperation and the exchange of ideas between all martial arts. The Kansas Chun Kuhn Taekwondo Association is a member of the World Chun Kuhn Taekwondo Federation, founded by Taekwondo pioneer Grandmaster Kim Bok Man.. . The Kansas Chun Kuhn Taekwondo Association teaches and promotes Grandmaster Kim Bok Man's Chun Kuhn Taekwondo techniques, empty hand patterns and weapons patterns. We also teach Kukkiwon, or Olympic, Taekwondo techniques and empty hand patterns, and test students for up to third Dan with Kukkiwon Certification.. . n 1941 when he was just seven years old, Grandmaster Kim Bok Man began to learn To-San, also known as Taekyun, an historical Korean martial art that was nearly forgotten when the Japanese assumed control and occupied Korea from 1910 until the end of World War II.. . When Grandmaster Kim was 16, he travelled to Seoul to join the Police Academy, but he was a day late to join the Academy. He was not returning home after traveling all the way to Seoul, so he joined the ROK Army instead. Although the legal age to join the ROK Army was 17, Grandmaster Kim's passion encouraged the recruiter to mistake Grandmaster Kim's age and allow him to sign up for service.. . While in the ROK Army, Grandmaster Kim began to informally teach soldiers in his unit the martial arts to help them in combat during the Korean War; a short time later, after more and more soldiers asked Grandmaster Kim to teach them, Grandmaster Kim requested and received permission to teach martial arts formally to soldiers. It was about 1954 when Grandmaster Kim met Captain Nam Tae Hi, assistant to General Choi Hong Hi, who was also interested in teaching martial arts to ROK soldiers. Grandmaster Kim was then transferred to General Choi's unit to help General Choi develop the martial art that in April 1955 would be named Taekwon-Do.. . As a pioneer of Taekwondo, Grandmaster Kim Bok Man developed and refined many of the techniques now used in Taekwondo. Grandmaster Kim Bok Man also helped develop 16 of the 24 patterns, or tuls, that General Choi assembled for early Taekwon-Do. In this regard, Grandmaster Kim is the only individual to have the distinction to have helped create so many of these early patterns. These early patterns are now known as the Ch'ang Hon patterns, and they were adopted by General Choi's International Taekwondo Federation in 1966 when it was founded. These patterns are practiced around the world yet today.. . Grandmaster Bok Man Kim, known as the Father of Taekwondo in several southeast Asian countries, was inducted into the Taekwondo Hall of Fame in 2007.
