Detailed description is . In countries that have a sticker scheme for unaddressed junk mail, a definition of junk mail is usually agreed by the industry, consumer groups, and politicians. As the junk mail industry in Malta doesn't support sticker schemes we don't have a definition. Until the happy day comes that they industry is able to acknowledge the errors of its way we'll have to muddle along.. . This group's suggestion is to define 'junk mail' as unaddressed, unsolicited and commercial advertisements. In other words, a 'No Junk Mail' sign should stop commercial items such as take-away menus and calling cards from local businesses, but not non-commercial items such political leaflets, local authority magazines and free newspapers.. . . What do we ask to be done?. . 1. Have MaltaPost, postmen/women and door-to-door deliverers to RESPECT NO JUNK MAIL stickers. 2. Have MaltaPost create a FREE OPT-OUT registration form online for all those who do not want Junk mail (as defined above) delivered to their letterboxes.. . . The Ecological Aspect. . The average adult in the USA receives a whopping 18 kilogrammes of junk mail a year and approximately 44% of this mail winds up in a landfill without having been opened!. . That's far more paper than a fully grown pine tree can provide. Now multiply that by a couple of hundred million people and I'm sure you get the picture. On top of that there's the substantial water footprint in creating the paper and the environmental impact of inks and chemicals, making the paper difficult to recycle. Then there's the printing process itself and transportation. Even if recycled paper is used, a lot of resources are consumed in the recycling process.. .
