The Anchor Cross Cancer Foundation is a public charity that has been designated as tax-exempt by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). Anchor Cross Cancer Foundation is supported by generous donations from Southern Cancer Center physicians, staff, patients, and their families, as well as outside organizations. Our mission is to provide:. ◾Financial assistance to anyone who may need it during their journey through the cancer treatment process.. ◾Ways to fund cancer education to the general public and professionals.. ◾Continued contributions to further research for treating and curing cancer.. . When Anchor Cross Cancer Foundation was established in 2007, we could not have predicted the changes in treatment for cancer that lay before us. There had not been significant advances in chemotherapy drugs at that time. In the last eight years that landscape has changed and there are many chemotherapy drugs being provided orally or are in the pipeline of clinical trials to be approved in the not too distant future. As these targeted therapies have emerged, we have been faced with the challenge of funding new and less toxic therapies that have yet to be approved by insurance companies. Without our Foundation, we would have patients in our community who would not have received these drugs and would not still be here with us today. That in itself has motivated us to focus on having funds available to help patients today and continue our fight for a cure. The Foundation has assisted patients recently with oral chemotherapy medications where one pill can cost several hundred dollars.. The Foundation has assisted patients who have lost their jobs due to their disease, and we helped them pay for their COBRA benefits so they could still receive care.. The Foundation, on an annual basis, provides Christmas to selected patient families, where we provide toys, clothes and school items as well as a full Christmas dinner to ensure that they have a wonderful Christmas family time together.. The Foundation funds transportation needs of patients who do not have any way to make their appointments. We also fund in certain circumstances paying for electric bills, food, and must have items that patients with cancer can no longer afford. We have employees who cook meals and deliver to patients on a weekly basis.. Recently, the Foundation purchased a blanket warmer for patients to use while receiving chemotherapy infusions.. We are a young foundation with over ten community leaders who make up our volunteer Board of Directors, and we have several fundraisers planned in 2013 and 2014. Every dime we receive goes to help patients with cancer in our community.. Foundation members make determinations about rewarding financial assistance on a case by case basis.
