Detailed description is The Apache County Veterans Memorial was dedicated on November 11, 2012. The bronze image is that of Cpl. Joe McCarthy USMC taken in Iraq in the spring of 2004. He was killed in action on September 6, 2004 along with 6 other Marines by a suicide bomber The Apache County Veterans Memorial was created to honor the Veterans of Apache County, both walking among us in our communities and at rest in our cemeteries. The memorial boasts three bronze statues depicting the image of Corporal Joseph McCarthy USMC that was captured in Iraq on Easter Sunday 2004 as he handed candy to Iraqi children at a check point. The statues were created by artist William Duffy, who donated a large portion of his time towards the completion of the statues. . . It also has two memorial benches; one in honor of the seven US Marines that were killed with Cpl McCarthy on September 6, 2004. A second honors the sacrifices of the US Marine Code Talkers. Also at the Memorial site is a stone wall identifying the site, containg a notable quote from President Abraham Lincoln. The wall and the benches were donated by local businessman Chuck Humpheries, owner of Cedar Creek Stone. . . Also present is a display of dog dags purchased by local residents to commemorate a family member or loved ones service to their country. The American flag and the POW flag are flown at the memorial. The Memorial site has future improvements planned at the site, including landscaping and additional benches. . . The Cpl Joe McCarthy Foundation, and the McCarthy family would like to thank everyone involved in the completion of the memorial. From volunteers who helped us sell food and other items; city and county workers who assisted us in planning and placement of the Memorial wall, dog tag display case and the statues themselves, this Memorial would not be possible without the countless hours of volunteer work amassed to make this dream a reality.
