The shoreline of Lake Michigan near Cedar Grove, Wisconsin has been known for concentrations of migrating hawks in autumn since the 1920s. Banding operations began in 1935 under the auspices of the Milwaukee Public Museum with assistance from the Civilian Conservation Corps. Helmut C. Mueller and Daniel D. Berger assumed the trapping and banding operations in 1950. The station has the longest sustained record for observations and trapping of birds of prey in North America.. . The 31-acre site was purchased by the Wisconsin Conservation Department (the forerunner of the Department of Natural Resources) in 1950 and became one of the state's first designated scientific areas in 1952. In 1983 the station officially became The Cedar Grove Ornithological Research Station, Inc. Operating costs have been borne by the volunteers except for the 1962-65 period when support was provided by a grant from the National Science Foundation. In more recent years we’ve been able to hire interns with the help of grants from a number of local sources.. CONSERVATION THROUGH RESEARCH . . .. . Responsible conservation activities are based on sound scientific research. This research station has provided valuable data for policy makers in Wisconsin. We have published more than 70 scientific papers during our 60 plus years of operation.. . From dawn to dusk each day from mid-August until late November we conduct trapping and netting operations. We tally all raptors and estimate numbers of many other migrating birds. During October and November we capture owls in nets that are tended regularly during the night. Since inception more than 41,000 hawks, owls and eagles representing 24 species of raptors have been banded at the station. We report banding data to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which reports to us recoveries of banded birds. . . MAKE A GIFT TODAY . . .. .
