Detailed description is Information, Resource and Referral Center for parents and professionals of children with special needs. The Parent Information Training Center was started in 1988 by Carol Little, as a parent Coordinator, and Charlotte Baker, as a Educator Coordinator. Toni Nelson joined the staff in 1993 as Family Support Coordinator, with the Early Intervention Program. The name changed with the times, and in 1998 became" Partners for Success". With the law and the needs of families so did the name changed again to support all services for children ages birth to 21, so Maryland Department of Education choose" Family Support Services" Marlene Powell joined the Family Support Resource Center in 2011 upon the retirement of founder Carol Little.. . The Family Support Center was started over 27 years ago with the sole intention of supporting parenting who have children with special needs, including but not limited to physical, intellectual, emotional, autistic, ADHD, and many behavior and or social issues. The center a variety of training's to parents & professionals.. . The center house the " June Harris Memorial Library", named after a parent from the Early Intervention Program who in 1993 gave Toni Nelson a check to start a Lending Library for parents. The library has evolved from toys and equipment,which became hard to maintain with the change of Natural Environment, so the library concentrated more on books & videos based on the needs pf parent needs by survey. The library is solely based on special needs, regarding disability specific topics, parenting, special education law, social skills, etc.. . The center also offers Parent to Parent support. Our staff are parents of children who have been or are currently going through the special education process, and can support families from their expertise. Staff offer 1:1 support & counseling in regards to understanding your child's special needs, IEP, and the programs available that can be supportive for your child & family.
